Kelloo Wete Konga
The Kelloo Wete Konga is a washed Ethiopian coffee from the renowned Yirgacheffe region, known worldwide for its elegance, clarity, and fruit-forward complexity. Produced by small-scale farmers from Wete Village in Konga Woreda, this lot represents the finest expression of Ethiopia’s southern highlands. Grown between 2,050 and 2,200 meters above sea level, the coffee captures the unique microclimate of Yirgacheffe — where cool nights and fertile soils yield cherries dense with sweetness and aroma.
This lot belongs to the “Kelloo” flavor profile, a word meaning “yellow” in the Oromiffa language. Coffees in this category are celebrated for their bright tropical notes — think peach, apricot, yellow florals, and stone fruit — layered with a juicy, round mouthfeel. The result is a vibrant and sunny cup that perfectly embodies the light and warmth of its highland origin.
The Farm
The Wete Konga washing station, owned by Wete Ambela Coffee Export PLC, processes coffees from dozens of smallholder farmers whose plots average just 1 to 2 hectares. At these elevations, heirloom coffee trees grow under partial shade alongside enset and other indigenous plants, creating a rich agroforestry ecosystem that sustains both soil health and biodiversity.
After selective handpicking, ripe cherries are delivered to the washing station for traditional wet processing: pulping, fermentation, washing, and drying on raised beds. The site produces around 54 tons of coffee per year, with every batch carefully separated by day and quality level. This attention to detail allows the Kelloo profile to shine — a cup that’s clean, floral, and intensely fruit-driven, yet grounded in the structure and balance that define great Yirgacheffe coffees.
The Variety
This lot consists of Ethiopian heirloom varieties, a term that refers to the rich genetic tapestry of indigenous coffee cultivars found only in Ethiopia. Each village, and often each farm, is home to distinct strains adapted over centuries to their microclimates. These heirlooms are the foundation of Ethiopia’s global coffee reputation, celebrated for their unparalleled aromatic range and complexity.
In Wete Konga, these varieties thrive in volcanic soils and cool mountain air, producing coffees with brilliant acidity and honey-like sweetness. When processed through the washed method, these heirlooms reveal their purest form — showcasing crystalline floral tones, citrus zest, and stone fruit sweetness. This combination of ancient genetics and meticulous modern processing creates a cup that feels both timeless and alive.
